Driving Ambition: Turning Sustainability Challenges into Growth Opportunities
Æra has worked with hundreds of leaders to navigate the fast-changing sustainability landscape while staying focused on growth. Eline Giskeødegård, Head of Innovation Upskilling at Æra, shares how businesses can turn sustainability challenges into real opportunities for growth.
What are the biggest challenges leaders face in sustainability today?
One big challenge is what I call “sustainability overwhelm.” There’s so much to keep up with—frameworks like CSRD, for example—that leaders often don’t know where to start. It can feel overwhelming to turn these broad ideas into specific, meaningful actions.
Another challenge is the way sustainability is often seen as just another cost. Many businesses focus on compliance and reporting instead of asking, “How can we use these frameworks to improve and grow?” Changing that mindset is really important.
How are market changes driving the need for innovation?
Markets are changing quickly. Customers and supply chains are demanding lower carbon footprints, sustainable sourcing, and circular business models. It’s no longer just about keeping up with these demands—it’s about using them as a way to innovate.
Take waste management, for example. Many businesses still think of waste as just a cost. But smart companies are rethinking this, turning by-products and waste streams into valuable materials or even new revenue sources.
Collaboration is also a big factor, especially in circular models. Working with partners across the value chain doesn’t just make compliance easier—it creates opportunities for innovation that you couldn’t achieve on your own.
In addition, there are significant social and governmental changes driving the need for innovation. Over the past few years, social issues have taken more of a backseat as environmental concerns have developed faster due to stricter regulations and their more tangible nature. However, there’s still a lot happening on the social side that businesses need to pay attention to. Afterall, everything is interlinked.
How is Æra helping leaders respond to these challenges?
To help leaders tackle these challenges, we’ve created a program called Transformative Impact Goals. It’s a practical master class designed to align sustainability with growth.
We help leaders use tools like double materiality to align business goals with sustainability requirements. This shifts the focus from simply ticking compliance boxes to creating a clear, strategic plan for growth.
Another key part of the program is setting transformative impact goals—targets that are both practical and inspiring. These help businesses lead in their markets while motivating their teams with a shared vision.
What can participants expect from the program?
It’s a hands-on, three-day experience. We focus on topics like linking strategy to sustainability, setting meaningful goals, and building partnerships for circular models.
Participants will work through real-life examples of how different industries are using sustainability to create competitive advantages. There’s also a networking dinner and a special excursion to help build connections and inspire new ideas.
Why should leaders see sustainability as a growth driver?
Sustainability isn’t just a challenge—it’s a chance to lead. By innovating and turning problems into opportunities, businesses can shape their future and find new ways to grow.
I always tell leaders, “This is the time to act.” Those who see sustainability as a strategy, not just a task, will future-proof their businesses and inspire change across their industries.
When is the next opportunity to join the program?
“At its core, sustainability isn’t a hurdle; it’s an opportunity to lead. We can harness innovation to shape the future of business,” Eline concludes. Ready to redefine sustainability as a growth driver?
